Internship project “A Head Start for Family and Consumer Sciences: Mentoring by UL Lafayette Hospitality Management Students” is well on its way.
During the month of September, the interns has visited eight (7) high schools across Acadiana speaking to 231 students. Project director and instructor, Becky Dubois and intern grant coordinators, Linda Fontenot and Mandi Britten, have combined forces in developing a program that affords Hospitality Management senior interns an opportunity to attend scheduled high schools and conduct presentations such as table manners and table setting, how to dress for success, how to fill out resume, how to fill out college application, what college life is like, knife skills, cooking demonstrations or any topics requested by high school instructor.
Along with theses monthly presentations the intern grant coordinators along with the entire student body of the Hospitality Management Department will host an Acadiana Youth Educational Conference and Culinary Competition for these 10 high schools on January 7-8, 2010. At this event, high school students will attend several educational seminars and/or participate in one or all of four different contests including the culinary competition. Every HRTM class has a section of this conference/ competition in which to plan, affording every college student the opportunity to use academic knowledge and skills learned.
It was once said, “It takes a village to raise a child.” UL Lafayette’s Hospitality Management Department is proud to be a part the village that will help to guide and direct high schools students to a brighter future. |
